Local comedian Carl Joshua Ncube sent ripples of laughter throughout Bulawayo at the weekend with his new stand-up comedy, The Big Announcement, which is in its second run in a comic partnership with his father.
A sizeable crowd who attended the show were left in stitches as Ncube kept them laughing for two hours. A slight accident midway through his performance, when part of the stage collapsed and left the comedian with torn jeans, did not deter him from putting up a splendid performance. In a pre-show interview, Carl revealed that comedy has always been part of his life and the show was a way of exposing his talent. “I’ve always been doing comedy while scripting for other people. I have had this concept (The Big Announcement) for a long time and I didn’t want to hand it over to anyone and that is why I decided to do it myself,” he said. He said although it was a surprise to some people that he has ventured into stand-up comedy, in his family it was the norm.“In our family it is not a surprise that I am doing stand- up comedy. My father is a comedian and I would say most of the jokes I share with my audience came from him. He is a regular MC at weddings and he keeps people laughing the whole day,” said Ncube. The 31-year-old said wedding plans were now underway following the public marriage proposal he made to his long-time girlfriend during the show’s opening in Harare. The show, which is unique as it integrates multimedia elements, began in Harare last week and will be taken to Mutare before Ncube embarks on a 65- day world tour which will take him to London, Texas, Brisbane, Malaysia, Johannesburg and Blantyre.
