Lesley Moyo, the Mail Harare-Zimbabwe's comedy culture is alive and showing encouraging
signs of growth following the recent launch of Simuka Comedy. The latest comedy brand in town features some upcoming and veteran
comedians. The pioneers of the comedy club are Carl Joshua Ncube,
Toropito, Simba the Comic King, Micheal K and Doc Sikela. The five put up a spirited performance last Thursday at the
Mannernberg where a full house witnessed the rebirth of Zimbabwean
comedy circuit. "Our first show at the Mannernberg was fabulous and we fused different
genres of comedy," said Doc Vikela in an interview with The Mail
Lifestyle. He added: "The group is made up of diverse genres. For instance Toripo
specialises in comedy news while Micheal K and Carl Joshua Ncube
focuses on social issues. We all focus on social issues, things that
we face on a daily basis but we always try to avoid politics." Vikela revealed that the club will soon scout for more talent as they
want comedy to go big in the country. "We want to give young and upcoming comedians the opportunity for them
to market themselves. We will be conducting auditions very soon and
those who want to be part of our club can contact us by sending their
contact details to our facebook page, Simuka Comedy. "I believe that Zimbabwe has the best comedians far much better than
South Africa because Zimbabweans are intelligent and witty," said
Vikela. Simuka Comedy hopes to stage bi-monthly events although they have
settled for monthly events for now as they grow the brand. Next week Wednesday the club will stage a show at the Zimbabwe College of Music. Since the 1980s, a new wave of comedy, called alternative comedy has
grown in popularity in Zimbabwe with its more offbeat and experimental
style. The country has seen the rise of comedians such as Safirio Madzikatire
(Mukadota), Freddie Manjalima (Kapfupi), Lazarus Boora (Gringo),
Omkhula, Edgar Langeveldt who all proved their mettle through
discussing social issues that affect the populous in a comical way. However, the country recently witnessed the rise of standup comedian
Carl Joshua Ncube who is currently on an international tour. Other comedians who have shown potential are the Bulawayo duo of Clive
and Ntando, who have kept crowds laughing in the City of Kings. Ncube brought his own style far different from his predecessors and he
is undoubtedly the best comedian in the country at the moment. He
mixed his comedy with graphic expressions and this has seen him carve
his own niche in the industry.
